First Detroit Grand Prix in INDYCAR
Two-pit stop strategy
“Race day is done here at the Detroit Grand Prix at Belle Isle, 18th for us. I was hoping for some yellow help, but it didn’t come, and I think that’s the way it goes sometimes so we’re looking on to Road America.”
START–21st
FINISH–18th
CHAMPIONSHIP–24th (74 pts)
Andretti Autosport took on the mean streets of Detroit for the final time at Belle Isle Raceway. Alexander Rossi made his mark with a second-place finish and the top finishing Honda after starting the race 11th. He made the most on-track passes and turned the third fastest lap of the race. His three-stop strategy in addition to turning qualifying quality laps gave Rossi his first podium finish of the 2022 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season.
Colton Herta, Romain Grosjean and Devlin DeFrancesco all had a two-stop strategy though each played out differently. For Herta, he earned an eighth-place finish as he hit fuel mark after fuel mark while awaiting a yellow that never came. Grosjean took the same gamble with fuel and would end his race in 17th after a final, third pit stop with three laps remaining. DeFrancesco did all that was asked of him and brought home an 18th-place finish. He ran a similar strategy to teammate Grosjean.
TIL NEXT TIME, I AM STILL WORKING ON MY REDNECK!
