Covington, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky Chapter of the Kentucky Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (FAME) and Mubea partnered to sponsor Garrett Smithley in this weekend’s Kentucky Speedway NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR XFINITY Series races.
“Participating in the NASCAR Truck and Xfinity Series at the Kentucky Speedway and engaging Smithley gives us a chance to reach students who might be starting to think about their plans after high school, and we want to offer KY FAME as a rich opportunity for them,” said Drew Farris, Training Manager at Mubea and NKY FAME Chapter Vice President.
For Smithley, the attraction to KY FAME was natural.
“My mom’s family is from Kentucky, so it feels like a second home for me,” said Smithley. “KY FAME is really special to me because my cousin was one of the inaugural students of the program, and he’s an engineer at Toyota. KY FAME gives kids in my generation an opportunity to grow, learn and improve their way of life.”
Smithley will drive the No. 07 SS Green Light Chevrolet Silverado on Thursday night live on Fox Sports 1 and the No. 0 JD Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro on Friday night live on NBC Sports Network. It will be his third NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start of the season. He sits 17th in NASCAR XFINITY Series driver points.
NKY FAME member companies supported the race with logo placement and will be among the employers at the KYFAME booth in the KY Speedway entrance with students in the Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) program, so visitors can ask questions and learn more about the program. Smithley is expected to be present at the booth on Thursday and throughout the weekend for autograph and picture opportunities.
The 2016 incoming KY FAME class includes 24 students from Northern Kentucky who were matched with 10 local manufacturing companies to develop highly desirable skills through work and study.
