Kevin Harvick, fast all week in practices, was extremely fast on race day as well, as he notched a thoroughly dominating win in Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix International Raceway. The win was Harvick’s fifth in a Cup race at PIR, and first overall since leaving Richard Childress Racing at the end of 2013, and hooking up with Stewart-Haas Racing.
This win, with the SHR Jimmy John’s #4 Chevy, came after the Stewart-Haas Racing driver led 224 laps of the 312-lap race. Harvick was in a class all unto himself Sunday!
Harvick, who led both of Saturday’s practice sessions, wasted no time moving up from his starting position of 13th place and into top three. Harvick eventually took the lead on Lap 74, and dominated from there, notwithstanding the fact that he had to manage several late restarts to keep the lead.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., a week removed from his second Daytona 500 win, had a strong showing as well, with a second-place finish. Team Penske teammates Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano finished third and fourth, respectively. Jeff Gordon rounded out the top five.
“Man, this just solidifies so many things, and so many decisions,” Harvick said, referring to his off season team change.
