Tyler Ankrum Looks For Second Win At Michigan

Tyler Ankrum

The NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series will head to Michigan International Speedway (Brooklyn, Mich.) this weekend as the series looks to set the field for the 2019 Playoffs. Tyler Ankrum and his No. 17 May’s Hawaii team have locked themselves into the playoffs after their victory at Kentucky Speedway, but head to Michigan searching for another win. Ankrum also has the possibility of locking up Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors this weekend.

Saturday’s race will mark the first time that the 18-year-old San Bernardino, Calif. native will race on the two-mile track in Michigan. He has nine 1.5-mile starts with an average finish of 11th place. His first-career Truck Series win occurred at the 1.5-mile track of Kentucky Speedway. Ankrum has one start a track over 1.5-miles where he finished in the second position on the 2.5-mile triangle shaped track of Pocono Raceway. For the season, with DGR-Crosley, Ankrum has an average starting position of 8th and average finish of 10th.

With his win earlier this season, Ankrum will be locked into the group of eight Truck Series drivers that advance to the 2019 Playoffs. At this time he is joined by one other Toyota Racing teammate in Hattori Racing Enterprises’ Austin Hill. If none of the 2019 Sunoco Rookie Contenders wins the race at Michigan International Speedway this weekend, Ankrum will be locked into receiving Rookie of the Year honors; an award that he also received last year in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.

Ankrum on Michigan: “I’m ready for Michigan this weekend. I think what we continue to build on the past few weeks has been really good. The fact that we can win, finish second and finish ninth on dirt is a pretty impressive feat for my No. 17 team. We are solidifying ourselves as competitors. Heading to Michigan with it being a two mile race track will be a challenge, but I don’t think that it will race a whole lot different than the 1.5-mile tracks that we’ve been on. I’m really excited for Michigan and proud of everyone at DGR-Crosley on what we’ve accomplished so far. Hopefully we can go up there and get another solid finish.”

TIL NEXT TIME, I AM STILL WORKING ON MY REDNECK!
