Harvick’s Team Get Penalized After Las Vegas Victory

Kevin Harvick
Infraction Date: 3/4/2018 (post-race inspection)
Team: #4–Kevin Harvick

Violation: Sections Rear Window Support and Structure b. & c.; 20.4.18 Rocker Panel Extensions .b

Note: Rear Window Support Braces must keep the rear window glass rigid in all directions at all times. The Right Side Rocker Panel Extension did not meet NASCAR rule specifications, the extension was not aluminum.

Penalty: Crew chief (Rodney Childers) has been fined $50,000. Car chief (Robert Smith) has been suspended from the next two Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Championship Points Events. Team has been assessed with the loss of 20 driver points and 20 owner points.  Additionally, the loss of 7 playoff points was added.

NASCAR has been extremely quiet regarding the advantage, if any, that the rear window flexing and the side skirts may have given the Stewart-Haas Racing No.4 Ford Fusion of Kevin Harvick.  It is yet still to be determined if the concave flexing in the right side of the back window gave this team any aerodynamic advantages over the rest of the field at Las Vegas.  Nevertheless, Rodney Childress is now $50,000 lighter in his bank account this week!
