QUALIFYING REPORT
09.02.17
No. 98 Deltro Energy Mazda
  • Qualified on pole with a fastest lap of 1:32.4394 for his seventh pole of the 2017 season and one shy of the multi-driver record that includes his father, Bryan Herta in 1993
  • Led the team in morning practice with a fastest lap of 1:33.3825, finishing the session second
“[Qualifying] was tough. With the tires and the cool conditions, we just kept going quicker and quicker. That’s the hardest session, you just have to keep putting in the laps consistently. I think [the race car] is good – I think we’ve had a good car all year. We just need to get a good opening lap, hopefully get ahead of the push-to-pass zone and go from there.”
No. 27 Synova Mazda
  • Qualified fourth for tomorrow’s season finale race, starting from Row 2
  • Earns his fifth straight top-five start since Toronto Race 2, his ninth top-five start of the 2017 season
  • Finished morning practice session third with a fastest lap of 1:33.5104
“Overall, it was a pretty good effort. Fourth place on the grid is pretty good. We were second or third on the first set of tires and, I think, we went the wrong direction with changes, maybe not the right decision. [The changes] made the car a bit worse rather than a bit better. We lost a couple of tenths there, otherwise I think we could have fought for pole, or at least the first row. I’m pretty confident for tomorrow that we’ll have a really good race car over a long run. It might be raining as well and I love racing in the rain so we’ll see how it goes.”
No. 48 Journey Mazda
  • Qualified seventh for tomorrow’s season finale race
  • Finished eighth in morning practice session with a fastest lap of 1:34.3919
“Qualifying was bit of up and down. I struggled a little bit on the first set of tires and we changed the car going out on the second set. It seemed a little bit better. It’s really close. I think a tenth could’ve moved me up three spots so it feels really close – we’ll work on the car tonight. We may have a rain race tomorrow which will be interesting. I’ve never been in the rain in this car, so we’ll see how that goes and see if we can come out on top.”
No. 28 K-Line Insulators USA Mazda
  • Qualified eighth for tomorrow’s season finale race
  • Finished seventh in morning practice, logging a fastest lap time of 1:34.2919
“Overall, I feel it was a good qualifying session for the Andretti Autosport crew. I think we’re all competitively in the front half of the field. I think that second tire run, we made a good change and picked up some time – the track was getting better. We caught some traffic behind one of the Carlin cars slowing down and kind of caught us the last few laps. We managed to put in a good run and qualify P7. I’m looking forward to starting there tomorrow, and congrats to my teammate Colton for winning the pole.”

TIL NEXT TIME, I AM STILL WORKING ON MY REDNECK!
