The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama weekend went green today as the field of 21 cars took the 17-turn scenic road course of Barber Motorsports Park for two rounds of practice under the sunny skies. Marco Andretti topped today’s time sheets recording his fast laps in the second session. Tomorrow will host another practice session before the drivers qualifying for Sunday’s 90-lap race.

Qualifying will be broadcast Saturday on NBC Sports Network at 3:30 p.m. CT.

No. 27 Andretti Autosport Honda
  • Finished the day quickest, with a fast lap time of 01:07.7134
“I think just as a team, we’re on the 27 side just really trying to focus on us and trying to make the best educated guess at what the reds would do, and I think we did a good job of that today. We did a good job of that at Long Beach, too. We just need to do it when it counts tomorrow (in qualifying). You know, it’s very important to qualify well here, so I’m pleased that we have the pace to hopefully be able to do that. But yeah, I mean, so far, so good. We just need to replicate it tomorrow.”
No. 28 DHL Honda
  • Ended today’s practice sessions 10th overall
“Overall, we ended both sessions in the top 10 and I think it’s a day where the DHL team learned a lot. We learned some things to keep and what not to do as well. That last session I was way too loose with the settings on the car so we know what we need to do tomorrow and hopefully we can be right there at the front. I think Marco (Andretti) showed good pace, so I think as a team we can all be up top.”
No. 98 Andretti Autosport / Curb Honda
  • Claimed the 12th spot overall as today’s practice concluded
“This morning was pretty good, but we started to develop some break issues this afternoon which definitely compromised our performance on the time sheets. We’ll have to understand why that is. Otherwise, I think the car is pretty good and Marco was P1 so we can compare data and make our car even better. We’ll just have to make sure we resolve those issues tonight and come back strong tomorrow.”
No. 26 Andretti Autosport Honda
  • Finished today’s practice 18th overall
“I think it was a difficult day for us. We tried a few things and it seems like the condition of the car was going the opposite way that we wanted – which is okay because we’re still learning. The sister cars are recording very fast times so I am looking forward to going into debrief and sharing all our data. We didn’t have a strong day today, but hopefully we’ll be in the front tomorrow.”

PRACTICE REPORT
04.21.17

This weekend Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires welcomes the 400th Indy Lights race when the green flag is waved over Sunday’s Race 2 of the double-header event. Today, the Andretti Four tackled one practice session in preparation for tomorrow’s qualifying and Race 1.

The grid will be set at 8:40 a.m. CT with the race beginning at 2 p.m.

No. 98 Deltro Energy Mazda
  • Finished practice in fifth position
“Overall, it was a great practice session. We didn’t go to new tires, which the top three did. So, to end fifth, with less than a paper between me and Kyle (Kaiser) is really good – I think we’re like .02 (of a second) off. It’s going to be close in qualifying, but we’re going to go back and make the Deltro Engergy car even stronger overnight and hopefully we can get the pole tomorrow.”
No. 27 Synova Mazda
  • Finished practice in eighth position
“Overall, I think it was a pretty good practice for us despite finishing P8. The three guys up front put new tires on, and we didn’t. We’re saving those for the race this weekend. I think we’re quite strong. Realistically, we’re a tenth (of a second) away from people with similar tires as us. We have a little bit of work to do for tomorrow, but I’m pretty confident for a good weekend for the Synova team.”
No. 28 K-Line Insulators USA Mazda
  •  Finished practice in 12th position
“It was a pretty good start for the weekend here at Barber. We were strong for most of practice and trying things towards the end of the session – playing with some aero settings. We found some useful information going into qualifying and I’m looking forward to seeing what the K-Line Insulators car has got tomorrow morning.”
No. 48 Flip Side Mazda
  •  Finished practice in 14th position
“Overall, it wasn’t the best practice session we’ve had. We know the Flip Side car is strong here from offseason testing, so it shouldn’t be a problem. I think we we’re struggling a little bit with the setup, as the heat makes the track really greasy out there. We’ll definitely regroup tonight and come back even stronger tomorrow.”
TIL NEXT TIME, I AM STILL WORKING ON MY REDNECK!
