Before taking to the high banks of Daytona International Speedway (DIS), NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) driver Blake Koch visited children at Halifax Health’s Betty Jane France Center for Pediatrics, Speediatrics, on Thursday afternoon. Koch, who was born at Halifax Health in 1985, also visited the labor and delivery unit of the hospital.
“It was so humbling to visit with the kids at Speediatrics today and share some words of encouragement with them,” said Koch. “The NASCAR Foundation does such an awesome job decorating the center and keeping spirits high with fun activities for the kids. I’m just appreciative of the opportunity to see all that they are doing to help these children”
Koch’s visit to the labor and delivery unit proved emotional in many ways. Not only was he able to find his own birth record in an archived birth log, he was also able to witness the labor and delivery team in action as an expecting mother gave birth outside of the hospital doors.
“I definitely was not expecting to witness the excitement of a birth today, but it was awesome to see the hospital’s team in action,” said Koch. “I think some of those nurses and doctors would be good NASCAR pit crew members with how quickly they sprung into action. I hope the mother and the baby are doing well. Being able to see my birth log was super cool and something I will always remember.”
Koch, who was born in Daytona Beach, lived in the area until the age of two, when his family moved to West Palm Beach. Today, he and The NASCAR Foundation left teddy bears and signed hero cards for the children and staff of Speediatrics.
Koch and the No. 11 LeafFilter Gutter Protection® team return to racing action for two practice sessions at DIS on Friday, February 24th. Koch makes his 10th career NXS start at the 2.5-mile trioval on Saturday, February 25th. One year ago in this event, Koch recorded his best finish at DIS of ninth.
