Thrivent Financial invites NASCAR fans to be part of a special effort to benefit Habitat for Humanity. The organization is joining forces with Cotton Incorporated’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ program for a denim recycling drive at Kansas Speedway, Thrivent Financial offices and Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations. A special paint scheme on the No. 95 Circle Sport – Leavine Family Racing Chevrolet SS at the upcoming NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway will celebrate the denim drive and recognize Thrivent’s more than 10 year partnership with Habitat through its Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity program.

Through the “Recycle Your Denim” campaign fans are being asked to bring pairs of jeans or other denim items they wish to contribute to Kansas Speedway, where they can drop them off on Sunday at collection locations in the Midway, infield or entrances in exchange for a $10 Superstore e-gift code which can be used online or on-site.  Fans also will be able to make financial donations online and learn more about where to send their jeans for recycling at beginning Oct. 10.

Denim jeans contributed will be upcycled into UltraTouch™ Denim Insulation that is often provided to Habitat for Humanity affiliates.

“Thrivent Financial has a long-standing relationship with Habitat for Humanity and we are pleased to be able to partner with Cotton Incorporated to support their mission in a new and exciting way,” said Craig Stacey, Director of Marketing at Thrivent.  “When we heard about the Blue Jeans Go Green™ program, we thought this was a perfect way to give fans a chance to support Habitat. Who doesn’t have an old pair of jeans they can pass on for a good cause?”

Michael McDowell, driver of the No. 95 Thrivent Financial Chevrolet, has seen firsthand how Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity can impact the community, as he regularly volunteers at builds when they coincide with the NASCAR schedule. He recently helped install UltraTouchTM Denim Insulation and applied vinyl siding on two Habitat homes being built side-by-side in Berkeley County, S.C.

“It’s very rewarding to work with a sponsor who gives back to the community so often,” said McDowell.  “Thrivent’s slogan ‘Live Generously’ is at the heart of everything we do through their partnership with the race team.  I know we have a lot of jeans laying around our house with four kids now.  So, we will certainly be joining in this program to give back to the community.”

Recycling denim to become housing insulation for communities in need has been the focus of Cotton Incorporated’s Blue Jeans Go Green™ program since 2006 after Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans area. Since then, the Blue Jeans Go Green™ program has diverted over one million pieces of denim from landfills, resulting in over 2 million square feet of UltraTouch™ Denim Insulation.

“It takes approximately 500 pairs of jeans to create enough insulation, similar to the one by West Bay Energy, for one average-sized U.S. home, so every pair of jeans collected from race fans will play an important role in giving back to the community,” said Andrea Samber, Co-Director, Strategic Alliances at Cotton Incorporated.  “Together with Thrivent Builds, we are looking forward to receiving denim from race fans to support Habitat affiliates in a unique way.”

The program continues Thrivent Financial’s commitment to Habitat for Humanity. Since 2005, nearly 5,000 homes have been built, renovated or repaired, 4.7 million hours have been volunteered and more than $213 million has donated by Thrivent and Thrivent members through Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, making the financial organization the number one non-governmental supporter of Habitat for Humanity.
