Hinchcliffe Tags The Wall In The First Practice Session

James Hinchcliffe

In just the first few minutes of the first practice session at Phoenix International Raceway, there have been two big crashes.

The Schmidt-Peterson Motorsports No. 5 Honda was the second car to impale itself on the turn 2 wall.  The IndyCars got out onto a relatively green track this morning.  The entire race track was pressure washed last night.  Additionally, the Indy Lights were out on the race track prior to this practice session for Indy Cars and their tires are a different manufacturer and a different compound.  Those two conditions have proven to add difficulties for the race teams to try to overcome in the first practice

The  Schmidt-Peterson Motorsports No. 5 Honda was the second car to impale itself on the turn 2 wall.  As Hinch got into the middle of 1 and 2 his race car just snapped and the rear end came around extremely quick and he was unable to catch it before he hit the wall.  It appeared that Hinchcliffe got down below the yellow line in the turn, which is extremely flat, and that upset the car and around the rear end came.

Earlier in the session The A.J. Foyt Racing No. 14 of Takuma Sato spun in much the same fashion, and just about in the same place on the race track as did Hinchcliffe, heavily damaging his race car also.

TIL NEXT TIME, I AM STILL WORKING ON MY REDNECK!
