Is there a new candyman on the horizon?
Rumors still persist throughout the garage area that Carl Edwards’ sponsor at Joe Gibbs Racing will be none other than the M&Ms/Mars brand.
While even the Edwards to JGR piece of the puzzle has yet to be officially confirmed, the most recent speculation has the current Roush-Fenway Racing driver is going to be conjoined with America’s most popular confection as his livery, M&M’s /Mars for 2015.
Over the last few weeks, representatives from JGR have been actively recruiting throughout the garage for a fourth team, but both Edwards and Gibbs remain mum on the driver’s status.
Where would that leave Kyle Busch, if Edwards comes to JGR and grabs M&M’s/Mars, you ask? Sources say Monster Energy, a long-time supporter of Busch, and primaryn sponsor on Busch’s Nationwide ride, would step up to the primary sponsorship level on the Sprint Cup ride. While Mars has backed ol Kylie for the last seven seasons, the company’s tenure with the 29-year-old racer has not always been drama and stress free.
On the performance side of this equation, however, Busch has earned 25 wins in the #18 and four Chase berths since 2008. KyBu is currently 10th in the point standings with a victory at Fontana.
Since Edwards graduated to the Cup Series full-time in 2005, he’s posted 22 wins. Edwards has appeared in seven of the last nine Chases. He is currently sixth in the point standings, and has one win that occurred at Bristol in March. Notwithstanding the semi-success that Carl Edwards has had so far this year, it appears that the Roush-Fenway team has been struggling, as a whole!
Nevertheless, it’s hard to rationalize an athlete, as health-conscious as Edwards, could actually embrace a brand with so very little nutritional value! What we have here, sports fans, is the real definition of a dichotomy!
Nevertheless, there have been stranger bedfellows within NASCAR!
