Regan Smith, the present driver of the Furniture Row Racing #78 Chevy has been told that he will not be back with that team for the 2013 season.  Smith confirmed the news to NASCAR.com after qualifying Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “I’ve been told it appears I won’t be back here next year,” Smith said. Furniture Row’s general manager, Joe Garone, could not immediately be located for comment. Smith didn’t want to speculate on the reasons behind the impending change, and he said he’s unsure if he will finish the season with the team!

This news opens up the old speculation door as to who his replacement might be.  There has been a lot of talk about Furniture Row starting a second team with, the much maligned, and very loose-lipped, Kurt Busch behind the wheel.  That garage rumor  was floating around when Furniture Row Racing was rumored to be talking to Dodge about a possible alignment with that manufacturer.  Busch met with Furniture Row back in early July.

However, now that the word is out that Smith will not return to the driver’s seat for next season.  The question floating around now is; could Barney Vissor, the owner of Furniture Row Racing, give that seat to the loose cannon, and the ultimate foul-mouthed, spoil brat, Kurt Busch?

Still another possibility to fulfill that diver’s seat could be Brian Vickers?  He has performed very well in his limited racing with Michael Waltrip Racing this season.  Both drivers, Kurt Busch and Brian Vickers, are on the short list for Furniture Row, which recently re-signed its technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing.

And just when everyone thought that “silly season” had settled down, it has reared its ugly head once again!
