(WOMR file photo)

The last person not named Johnson to win the Sprint Cup championship won the championship again, as well as The Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway Sunday. Ten weeks ago Tony Stewart was not even considered a favorite to win a single Chase race, let alone the 2011 Sprint Cup championship. However, what his team was able to accomplish has never been done before since the Chase was established.

The Stewart-Haas Racing Office Depot/Mobil 1/Burger King #14 Chevy won 5 out of the 10 Chase races, including the very last race of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway. In winning the last race, Stewart rallied to accumulate enough point to tie the Carl Edwards, who came into this race the points leader. The tie breaker for this ties went to Tony Stewart, since he had won more races during the season than had Edwards.

Tony Stewart knew there was only one way he could assure himself of a third career Sprint Cup championship in the days heading up to Sunday’s season-ending Ford 400 Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and that was to win the race. That is just exactly what he did!

Stewart is the first owner/driver to win the championship since Alan Kulwicki accomplished the feat back in 1992.

Recapping, to win the race Stewart had to overcome two lengthy pit stops to repair the hole in the grill that resulted from some debris that was kicked up and ran over by Stewart early in the race. All total, Stewart passed 76 cars on his marches from 40th and 38th place, respectively, en route to the lead!

Even though Edwards had a very fast race car on Sunday, it was Stewart who had THE faster, and more dominating, pony to ride at Homestead-Miami Speedway!

Check out the 2011 Sprint Cup Chase Championship points results.

(WOMR file photo)

This is Championship Weekend in NASCAR.

So far two of the three championships have been determined at Homestead-Miami Speedway. However, the one that has everyone buzzing is yet to be determined. The Sprint Cup championship is the culmination of thirty-six weeks of racing throughout the USA. Therefore after thirty-five weeks, the championship is down to one race, two drivers, and just the tiniest of margins, 3 points, in determining who will be the reigning 2011 Sprint Cup champion!

The two drivers who have survived the Chase format for the 2011 season is, two-time champion Tony Stewart, and the consistently performing Carl Edwards.

In the head-to-head comparisons, it appears to be a dead-heat. That is, both drivers have two wins at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. On closer scrutiny, Stewart’s two wins came on the older flat configuration, Edwards’ two wins, however, have come on the newer progressively banked configuration!

Nevertheless, Tony Stewart has won many championships during his racing career, and most likely can deal with the pressure. Stewart may have a better understanding of what to expect, what it takes to win a championship, but is that enough to make a difference?

Sometimes being new to the pressures of a championship hunt, can work in your favor. Could it be that, what Carl Edwards doesn’t know what he doesn’t know, be a benefit to his quest for the championship?

Who will stake their claim on the Sprint Cup championship? For most who are in the know, it is a dead heat. However, I will stick my neck out with a bold prediction. Just twelve weeks ago Tony Stewart made a bold statement that his team didn’t deserve to be in the Chase, with the way that they performed in the races leading up to the Chase. His team was extremely inconsistent during “the regular season”! That comment obviously lit a fire within the organization!

It is my opinion that the most consistent driver during this season will win the championship. That driver is Carl Edwards, because………………………….

Winning is an attitude!

Who do you think will exhibit that winning attitude today at Homestead-Miami Speedway?

One race, two drivers, one championship, who will be the last man standing?

TIL NEXT TIME, I AM STILL WORKING ON MY REDNECK!

(WOMR file photo)

This weekend the spotlight was on the two car race for the 2011 Sprint Cup championship, as well as the newly reconfigured, and newly resurfaced racing facility.

I can tell you from my view in my seat in the Allison Tower, from walking through the pits, as well as strolling up and pit road, this new configuration is fantastic. Even though the racing groove started out very thin, with just one lane of racing through practice on Thursday and Friday, however, by the start of the Nationwide race on Saturday afternoon, the racing groove had widened out allowing some side-by-side racing in the Nationwide race.

By the end of the Nationwide race the groove widened just in time for the K&N West Series to take the track and widen out the groove even more! Both the Nationwide and the K&N races were action packed, and very exciting preliminary races that promised to lead up to a very good Sprint Cup race Sunday!

Early on in the race Tony Stewart took control. For the first half of the race it appeared that he was cruising to his 5th win in the first nine races of the Chase! But as the day proceeded on, Kasey Kahne stole the spotlight. Kahne may not be in the Chase, however, for one day at least, he was the talk of NASCAR when he won the Kobalt Tools 500 Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway.

This was Kahne’s first win for Red Bull Racing, his 11th career victory, and his first victory in 81 races.

“It feels so good,” Kahne said. “It’s been a long time coming. This whole Red Bull team has done an unbelievable job to keep working hard. Kenny Francis (crew chief) keeps on it – everybody at Red Bull, the car, the Toyota engine. It was a great run today. The guys did an awesome job. We fell back a little bit early and then came back and just kept getting it better. These guys haven’t given up in the last three months. It’s been really cool. It was really, really cool. It was slippery early, but as the tires built heat and got rubber on the track, the Goodyear tires came in pretty good. It ended up being a great race. I’m really excited.”

So the two-horse race for the championship leaves The Valley of The Sun heading for South Florida with exactly the same point spread that existed when they both drove through the tunnel Friday at Phoenix. Edwards leads Stewart by the slimmest of margins, just 3 points.

The drama is building for quite a spectacular championship weekend at Homestead! Stay tuned to see which one will unseat Mr. five Time, Jimmie Johnson!

Check out the unofficial results from the Kobalt Tools 500 at Phoenix.

With one race to go for the Sprint Cup championship here is the standings.

Twelve drivers, now one race, on championship, who will be the last man standing?

(WOMR file photo)

Sunday in Ft. Worth, TX, Tony Stewart backed up his “trash talk” to Carl Edwards by winning the AAA Texas 500.

Without a race win in “the regular season”, this victory was Stewart’s fourth win in the first eight races in the Chase, as well as his 43rd career victory! Stewart won this race in a very dominating fashion leading 173 of the 334 laps of the race.

Is this starting to sound like the past five years when Jimmie Johnson would dominate in the Chase races? It would appear that the Chase has been whittled down to a two car race, Stewart and Edwards. Which of these two drivers will be the one who wrestles the Sprint Cup championship from the grasp of “Mr Five Time”, Jimmie Johnson?

This victory was not enough to give Stewart the Chase points lead. However, this victory did eat into the points spread that Edwards had prior to the start of the race. Stewart cut into the previous eight point lead, now trailing Edwards by just 3 points with two races left in the season.

The Sprint Cup drivers now head back out West to a newly paved, and reconfigured Phoenix International Raceway. With new pavement and a slight configuration change, all the race teams have had to throw away their notebooks on PIR, and start fresh in their approach to this race track. Phoenix is going to be challenging for all teams exactly for the above mentioned reasons.

Therefore, Phoenix may be looked at by all race teams in the same fashion that the race teams viewed Talladega two weeks ago. There is the new unknown regarding PIR. Who will master the reconfigured facility? There is no doubt that, in light of this very tight championship race, Phoenix is going to play a very integral part of crowning the Sprint Cup champion!

Check out the unofficial results from the AAA Texas 500.

Here is the Chase standings after the finish of the AAA Texas 500.

Twelve drivers, now two races, one championship, who will be the last man standing?

See you next weekend from the Phoenix International Raceway!

TIL NEXT TIME, I AM STILL WORKING ON MY REDNECK!

The final pieces to “The Danicamania Puzzle” were announced Friday at the Texas Motor Speedway. In a press conference with her Stewart-Haas Racing team owner, Tony Stewart, the ten race Sprint Cup schedule was formally enumerated. It was decided that Patrick will run a total of 10 Sprint Cup races beginning with the 2012 Daytona 500.

Patrick will race the Stewart-Haas Racing #10 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet, bearing the number she first used in karting, during Daytona’s Speedweeks, where she currently will need to qualify on time. Her schedule will also include events at Darlington, Bristol, Atlanta, Chicagoland, Dover, Texas and Patrick’s home Phoenix event, the penultimate race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

“This announcement has been a long time coming, and it’s nice to be able to unveil the car and reveal the schedule for next year, finally,” Stewart said. “We took the whole schedule and took races that we thought would be really challenging for her and to pick tracks she needed to put emphasis on.

“We’re keeping two dates open to see how the start of the season goes and make sure we can call an audible if we need to. If we see a place or Danica feels like there’s a track that she struggled at, we have that flexibility to plug them in. But we will run 10 full races with her.”

“The most weighted factor [in determining the schedule] was places that might be a challenge — places that had unique characteristics, that would be good to get some extra laps at,” Patrick said.

“At a place like Darlington, for example, where I’ll run the Cup and Nationwide cars together, one absolutely will help the other. Tony [Eury Jr., Nationwide crew chief] has said sometimes the Cup guys like to do the Nationwide races to get more laps so they get more comfortable on the track.

“Sometimes guys like to do races at places they’re good at, so they can just have fun — like (Dale Earnhardt) Junior at Bristol, or something. But for me, it’s going to be about laps.”

Patrick understands that some tracks will be easier to tackle than others.

“Darlington’s going to be an awful lot of fun,” Patrick said, tongue obviously in cheek. “The expectation levels will be low, which is probably a good thing.

“To be honest, from my perspective, I did not want to start my year in a Cup car — for the races I was going to do — at someplace like Darlington. Everybody’s going to be watching, especially at my first Cup race. And there’s going to be more news about it, so I didn’t want [Darlington] to be my first one.

“I wanted to start somewhere where I could have fun, and where I had a chance to do really well.”

Patrick had a chance to win the July Nationwide Series race at Daytona, the first NASCAR stock car superspeedway race she competed in, until a competitor triggered an accident coming to the finish.

“There are other places where I’ll go that will take a long time to learn,” Patrick added to her Daytona reasoning. “So it was that, and it’s just a good weekend to start, because it’s good for Go Daddy and the other partners.”

Patrick has lived in Scottsdale, Ariz., near Phoenix while competing in IndyCar — which means she’s not been near the Andretti Autosport shops in Indianapolis — or JR Motorsports or Stewart-Haas in the Charlotte, N.C., area either. She won’t change, even considering she’ll have 43 stock car races on her docket next year.

“I go [to the shops] when I need to go and I’ll go to make seats and get to be friends with everybody,” Patrick said. “But let’s face it; we’re going to spend 33 weekends together in Nationwide and eight to 10 weekends in Cup together — so we spend a lot of time together.

“I’m always available by phone and if they need me to fly to Charlotte that’s exactly what I’ll do. But I don’t feel the need to set-up shop [near Charlotte] — I don’t get that many days off [smiling] so to be honest I probably wouldn’t be at the shop that many days.”

Stewart said that with Patrick’s announcement, efforts to hire a crew chief for the program would be ratcheted-up, describing the relationship as a marriage where “there aren’t a lot of people that you can plug into the positions.”

Stewart also reiterated that his organization would continue trying to put sponsors in place to run the #10 car full-time next season and hasn’t set a date where the organization wouldn’t consider the additional funding.

I wonder how her new race team feels about her not coming to the shop, except when needed? After all, she said that she is available by phone anytime!! Sounds to me like a GREAT team player! I’m just saying………………!

TIL NEXT TIME, I AM STILL WORKING ON MY REDNECK!

(WOMR file photo)

Time is ticking!

When the well versed NASCAR race fan thinks of Martinsville Speedway, one can only think of time.

This race track has been on the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule ever since it’s inception in 1948. Martinsville Speedway has withstood the test of time, and is one of the most historic tracks on the schedule. It was also the seventh race in the Chase, therefore, just leaving three races left in the season. One could say that time is now running out on the Chase contenders to make their championship bid.

Tick, tick, tick…………………..

To some, time equates to patience, which at a NASCAR short track is always in very short supply, especially at Martinsville. To win races on the short tracks of NASCAR one must bide their time and, therefore, exercise patience. By doing that you will, most likely, be able to keep the fenders on the race car, drive your car onto the hauler, generally have a good day at the track, and quite possibly leave the track with a race win.

In a race that looked more like the “Brian Vickers Destruction Derby” than a NASCAR Chase race, the “patience” part of the race was in very short supply today! It appeared that Vickers has watched “Days of Thunder” way too many times! Throughout the course of 500 hundred laps today, Vickers took great pride in hitting anything that was moving on, or near, the racing surface! The only thing that escaped his “cross hairs” was the pace car! Quite frankly, I am not so sure that he gave the pace car a bye, I truly think that he tried but failed miserably to include the pace car in his tally of carnage!

Today the sponsor, Tums, could have sold a ton of product just to the race car drivers! The Tums Fast Relief 500 held up to its image of beatin’, bangin’, and wreckin”!

Sunday, as time was running out, and with only three laps remaining, Tony Stewart passed Jimmie Johnson to win the Tums Fast Relief 500 at the Martinsville Speedway. This is the third victory this season for Stewart, all of those victories have come in the Chase races. Additionally, this is the 42nd career victory for Smoke, who issued a warning to the Chase leader, Carl Edwards in victory lane.

Stewart issues a challenge!

“He’d better be worried,” Stewart said of Edwards after the race, “that’s all I can say. He’s not going to have an easy three weeks.” The gauntlet has been thrown down!

Miraculously, after twice being lapped on the race track, Edwards salvaged a decent run and retained his lead in the Chase standings with a ninth-place finish, as his two closest pursuers entering the race, Matt Kenseth and Brad Keselowski, both experienced late trouble and finished 31st and 17th, respectively.

With just three races left in the Chase, it would appear that it is now a four horse race, absent one of the following four faltering next week at Texas. Edwards leaves Martinsville with just a slim 8 point lead over Tony Stewart, who surged up two places in the standings with this victory. Kevin Harvick still lurks just 21 points back resting in third place. “Blazingly Bad Brad” Keselowski rests in fourth place now 27 points back of the leader. Matt Kenseth slid back three places to fifth place in the Chase down 36 points. In spite of finishing second today, Jimmie Johnson sits in sixth the Chase 43 points, on full race, behind the Chase leader.

Here is the unofficial results of the Tums Fast Relief 500.

(WOMR file photo)

The season that I am referring to is “The Chase” season. Two races have already been run and are in the record book. Tony Stewart has come to life from a 26 race “hibernation period”. In just two weeks the Stewart-Haas Racing #14 Office Depot/ Mobil 1/Burger #14 Chevy has risen from the ashes like the phoenix!

For those of you who are not up all your mythology, I will give a brief background on the phoenix bird.

A phoenix is a mythical bird with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends). It has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again. The new phoenix is destined to live as long as its old self. In some stories, the new phoenix embalms the ashes of its old self in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis (literally “sun-city” in Greek). It is said that the bird’s cry is that of a beautiful song. The Phoenix’s ability to be reborn from its own ashes implies that it is immortal, though in some stories the new Phoenix is merely the offspring of the older one. In very few stories they are able to change into people.

So now that we are all current on our mythology, the story will continue!

Tony Stewart’s 2011 season has resembled the phoenix, in that, his results were steadily declining and taking the team straight to ashes. It looked as though his season was destined for disappointment and mediocrity. Then like the resurrection of the phoenix from flames and ashes, he dominates the first two races of The Chase! With those two performances, Stewart now is emerging as a very strong favorite to win this year’s Chase.

However, on opposite end of the spectrum there are a three race teams that are faltering. The most glaring disappointment of the 2011 Chase is the Joe Gibbs Racing #11 FedEx Toyota driven by Denny Hamlin. Last season Hamlin narrowly missed snaring the 2010 Sprint Cup championship from the grasp of “ol Five-Time”, Jimmie Johnson. Fast forward one year, after two races of “the post-season”, Hamlin is, for all intense and purposes, already eliminated from any possibility of winning the 2011 Chase for The Cup. Hamlin currently is in 12th place, 66 points out of first place. The max points that a driver can score in a race is 48 points. Therefore, one can see that he is a full 1 1/2 race worth of points down from the leader, a very daunting and steep uphill battle to overcome!

The two remaining drivers that WOMR have questions about are the Busch brothers. I believe that both brothers are feeling the pressure of the Chase. Kurt started off the Chase by scoring a 6th place finish in the first race at Chicagoland. However, following that race he was involved in a couple of skirmishes with the media that was well documented involving the Kurt Busch-Jimmie Johnson “love-affair” in the preceding weeks.

Following “the flare-up” with the media, the Penske Racing #22 Pennzoil Dodge had some problems in pre-race tech inspection last Sunday at Louden. The prevailing feeling in the garage area has it that, because the race team has had some tech issues in the preceding weeks, and because of the apparent infraction that occurred in pre-race inspection at Louden, NASCAR made the decision to hold the #22 Pennzoil Dodge in the inspection area until 10 minutes prior to the start of the race as NASCAR’s message to the race team! The end results was that the race team could only rally to finish 22nd last Sunday. Therefore, for the first two races of the Chase Kurt Busch has only averaged a 14th place finish, that will not cut it in the Chase with the extremely fierce level of competition!

The other Busch brother, ol Kylie, seems to be very inconsistent as well. In the first Chase race, Chicagoland, the Joe Gibbs #18 M&M’s Toyota was wheeled by Kyle Busch to a very disappointing 22nd place finish. That plummeted him down to 9th in the standings after the first race. Last Sunday at Louden, Kyle only improved his finishing position slightly better at the end of the second race. The JGR #18 Toyota escaped, very luckily, with an 11th place finish, moving the team up three positions to 6th in the standings. Nevertheless, ol Kylie has only averaged a 15.5 place finish for the first two races in the 2011 Chase. Once again, read the last half of the sentence in the previous paragraph, it is appropriate to describe the #18 race team’s predicament!

Tis the season, fall, and we know this because the leaves are starting to fall off the two Busch’s!

Check out the Chase standings at the culmination the first two races.

What are your views of the remaining eight, the race teams chances, and your views on who will likely be the 2011 Sprint Cup champion?

Twelve drivers, now eight races, one champion, who will be the last man standing?

TIL NEXT TIME, I AM STILL WORKING ON MY REDNECK!

Sunday Tony Stewart found himself on the good side of a reversal of fortune at Louden. Last year Tony Stewart was leading the race with only a couple of laps remaining when he ran out of gas, thereby allowing Clint Bowyer to pass him for the victory. Fast forward one year, Sunday Clint Bowyer was leading the race handily with three laps remaining when his fuel tank ran dry, surrendering the lead to “Smoke”.

“Darien told us we were two or three laps to the good and I just got to run hard all the way to the end,’’ Stewart said. “It felt good, but it’s way too early to be counting chickens right now.’’

It was no surprise that his Stewart-Haas Racing #14 Mobil 1/Home Depot Chevrolet was good here this weekend. He has now won three times at the New Hampshire track and finished second behind Stewart Haas Racing teammate Ryan Newman here in July.

With his second consecutive victory, his second of the season, and the 41st of his career, Stewart has more than a shot at the title. The 2002 and 2005 Cup champion, who downplayed his own chances entering NASCAR’s 10-race playoff, now has to be considered the favorite.

This is the second race in a row that fuel mileage played the key role in determining the outcome of the race. It is also the second fall race in a row at Louden that has come down to fuel consumption! Unfortunately, this is not the last time that fuel consumption will determine the race winner in NASCAR!

This Chase is starting out much the same as the 2008 Chase did. In 2008, Greg Biffle won the first two races of the Chase, only to finish third at the end of the Chase. Could this be the year that Tony Stewart emerges from being an extremely dark horse pick to win the Chase, less than five weeks ago, to de-throne old Five-Time, Jimmie Johnson?

Although Tony Stewart surged into the lead in the Chase point standings, Kevin Harvick lurks in second place a mere 7 points behind. “Blazingly Bad” Brad Keselowski moved solidly into 3rd place, moving up 3 places in the standings, just 11 points back. Carl Edwards fell one position to 4th place just 14 points behind Stewart. Jeff Gordon ratcheted up six positions to 5th position, after running out of gas last week at Chicagoland.

Check out the unofficial results for the Sylvania 300 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Ten races, twelve drivers, one championship, who will be the last man standing?

Tony Stewart was 0 for 26 in “the regular season”. However, on Monday Stewart began the Chase by winning the Chicagoland Speedway, GEICO 400 race and now going 1 for 1 in “the playoff season”. Stewart’s last victory came at the Auto Club Speedway in October 2010,today he led the final 30 laps that featured many fuel tanks running out of gas on the final lap of the race.

“You couldn’t pick a better weekend to get that first win of the year than here at Chicago, obviously,” Stewart said. “We felt like there were three or four opportunities earlier in the year that we let some get away from us. But we have struggled.

“We’ve had a miserable year. But the last three weeks have really started coming into it. We had a really good run in Atlanta. Good solid run last week at Richmond and then to come out this weekend, I didn’t honestly know going into the race, I don’t think Darian either one of us thought that we had as good a car as we thought we needed to win today. But it didn’t take long in the race to figure out that we were pretty solid.”

Stewart had enough in his tank to reach the checkered flag first. Kevin Harvick was second and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Check out the unofficial results from the GEICO 400.

There are now nine races, twelve drivers, one championship, who will be the last man standing?

Carl Edwards took the lead during a final round of green flag pit stops with about 30 laps to go, held off a resilient, and dominate Tony Stewart, all the while winning the Kobalt Tools 400 Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday.

The Kobalt Tools 400 win was the third win for Carl Edwards in the last five races, dating back to the Phoenix race in November of 2010. It was win number two for Edwards at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Stewart finished second, 1.2 seconds back in his Stewart Haas Racing Chevrolet, and Juan Pablo Montoya was third in an Earnhardt Ganassi Racing Chevy.

“The key to winning today was my team, my Ford team,” Edwards said. “These guys are unbelievable. Roush Fenway is great. I have to thank Aflac for being with us, Scotts and Kellog’s. Scotts easy seed you can grow grass anywhere with that stuff. Sprint, Subway all the fans.

“It is unreal. When you are a kid you dream about this and how cool it would be to go to Vegas and fly a bunch of women there in a private plane and race cars and I did it. I brought my mom, my mother-in-law and my daughter and we came here and raced and I am having a blast.”

The win in The Kobalt Tools 400 came just one week after a devastating Sunday afternoon in Phoenix. Edwards won the pole for that race and appeared to have a car which was more than fast enough to get the victory. Early in the race, however, he was forced into the infield grass and the car was torn up.

“Yeah, it means a lot coming off of Phoenix,” Edwards, who won for the 19th time in Cup and gave Roush Fenway Racing its 121st victory, said. “I went home last week and I had no clue. I just didn’t know how things were going to go from there. You only don’t get a good race car like that very often, but we had another one today.”

Here is the unofficial results for The Kobalt Tools 400.

Once again it has been proven that the dominate car does not always find its way into Victory Lane!

What is your view on the the Las Vegas race?
