The man generally credited with the saying, “Know how to make a million dollars in racing? Start out with 2 million dollars!”, Junior Johnson, is once again entering the NASCAR foray as a car owner.

Over NASCAR’s storied history, there have been hundreds of men tried and failed in their attempt to make money in racing. Most likely more men have lost their butt in racing than in the gold rush on the 1850′s. It appears that those men should have heeded Junior’s warning. Yet the man who coined that phrase is apparently defying his own logic, at this the worst possible economic conditions, and getting back into “the racin’ bidness”!

According to a story on SPEED.com by Mike Hembree, Junior is in the process of hiring several employees for the Junior Johnson Racing team he is building on the family farm in Hamptonville, N.C. Junior plans to field cars for his 17-year-old son Robert.

Robert, a high school junior, has often expressed interest in following in the tire tracks of his Hall of Fame father and has already run some lower-level races.

If it were anyone else one would say this is a classic case of a doting dad letting his heart over-rule his head. But Junior Johnson is not just any doting Dad, this Dad knows what he’s doing!

During his driving days, Johnson was as good as there was, and became equally successful as a team owner. Junior was tough and competitive as driver and shrewd and businesslike as an owner. That’s a hard combination to beat, and few did.

WOMR always been a Junior Johnson admirer, and totally agree with Tom Wolfe who immortalized Junior in the famous Esquire article tiled “The Last American Hero.”

Forget Junior’s Snuffy Smith, country-bumpkin façade. He can look, talk and act like a backwoods mountaineer

(Robert Johnson and his Hall of Fame father)

when he wants to, but beneath the act he’s as money-smart as a Wall Street banker and as marketing-shrewd as a New York advertising executive. Do you remember who brought R.J. Reynolds Tobacco to NASCAR, opening up a gold mind that forever changed the sport?

Junior Johnson, that’s who!

Don’t let the hounds-on-the-porch routine fool you; Junior is city-slicker savvy.

Even though he’s been out of the sport for years, Johnson hasn’t forgotten what it takes to woo corporate sponsors and make cars go fast. Just because the ol hound rests under a shade tree for awhile doesn’t mean he forgets how to hunt!

WOMR suspects that ol Junior hasn’t forgot how to make a car go fast. If that suspicion holds true, look for Junior’s kid to start making a name for himself in the K & N East series soon, and possibly move on up into the three elite touring series of NASCAR in the near future!

So far Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has been carrying the torch as the son of a NASCAR legend in the upper echelons. But wouldn’t it give you goosebumps seeing ol Junior Johnson coming through the tunnel at Daytona one more time? It might be a few years before that could happen, but there are stranger things that have happened!

What is your thoughts on “The Last American Hero” getting back into “the racin’ bidness”?

TIL NEXT TIME, I AM STILL WORKING ON MY REDNECK!

Robert Glen Johnson, Jr., better know as Junior Johnson nearly walked away from the biggest victory of his legendary racing career. Junior’s win in the 1960 Daytona 500 was momentous, but it was Johnson’s discovery in practice that would shape the face of superspeedway competition in NASCAR forever.

Johnson was saddled with an all too slow Chevy, one that was entered by the late local dog track owner, John Masoni. It was hastily assembled by car builder Ray Fox. Johnson realized early that he had no chance of beating the faster fleet of Pontiacs.

Junior also realized that if he could just “suck up on their tail”, they couldn’t shake him off. During the race Johnson would tuck in behind the Pontiacs of Cotton Owen and Jack Smith. Johnson said,”They couldn’t shake me. I realized then it was something about the air stream creating a slipstream in which a slower car could keep up with a faster one.”

The idea of “drafting” was born!

Junior Johnson won 50 races as a driver and another 132 as a car owner. He also won 6 championships as a car owner, 3 while Cale Yarborough drove for him and 3 championships with Darrell Waltrip as his driver.

To say that Junior Johnson was an innovator would be vastly understated! He was race car genius, pure and simple!

He was nicknamed “The Last American Hero”. That is the title of the movie that was made from his autobiography of the same name.

This morning NASCAR celebrated the opening of their brand, new state of the art, Hall of Fame. Many of the living legends of NASCAR assembled for the grand opening ceremonies. The official opening ceremonies was briefly “interupted” by the loud rumbling of Richard Petty rolling up the stage in his Petty Enterprise Blue and Day-Glo Red #43 STP Dodge! Junior Johnson followed close in a 1940 Ford. That stirred the emotions of the crowd to a rousing and standing ovation!

After the hour long festivities, several of the living legends of NASCAR assembled to simultaneously insert their NASCAR ID’s into a card reader to open up the doors of the Hall of Fame to the public.

On May 23rd the Hall will formally induct the initial class of five NASCAR “Hall of Famers”. That first class consists of: Bill France,Sr., Bill France,Jr., Richard Petty, Junior Johnson, and Dale Earnhardt,Sr.

So if or when you get close to Charlotte, NC, it would behoove you to take some time to visit NASCAR’s newest innovation.

NASCAR has decided to leak slowly some of the 25 people who are on the first ballot for the initial induction into NASCAR’s Hall of Fame.

The first individuals to be inducted into the Hall of Fame should be, really, a no brainer for NASCAR! Unfortunately, NASCAR has limited the first class to five inductees, only. The life of NASCAR is now 60 years old and to just select 5 people for the first class is extremely unfair!

To have a 60 year history, and to limit the first class of inductees to just 5 people seems to be self defeating. It would seem that for the first class of inductees, those persons who were the pioneers and the backbone of NASCAR’s early years and growth, should be enshrined in the first class.

Here is my list for the first class to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame:

1. Big Bill France for obvious reasons, the founder of NASCAR

2. Bill France, Jr., got R.J. Reynolds on board as title sponsor

3. Lee Petty, Petty Enterprises

4. Richard Petty, 7 championships and 200 victories

5. Junior Johnson, driver, owner, car, and engine builder

6. David Pearson, 104 victories

7. Darrell Waltrip, 84 victories

8. Bobby Allison, 84 victories

9. Cale Yarborough, 83 victories and 3 successive championships

10. Dale Earnhardt, Sr., 76 wins and 7 championships

11. Rick Hendrick, car owner

12. Richard Childress, car owner

I could add a few more that are worthy to honored in the very first class of inductees. However, this is my initial class of inductees to NASCAR’s Hall of Fame.

What is your opinion? What would your initial classs look like?
